Hi, I'm your CPA!

I'm Marian Harvin, owner of M. A. Harvin Accounting. I'm a CPA licensed in Maryland and I have over 10 years of accounting experience.

What is a CPA? Of course a Certified Public Accountant. Not just a glorified bookkeeper (a useful skill!) or a glorified tax preparer (another useful skill). In fact, according to the AICPA, a CPA is a, " is a trusted financial advisor who helps individuals, businesses, and other organizations plan and reach their financial goals." This definition is known to business owners as well. Because of this title of "trusted financial advisor," I get a lot of questions from clients and prospective clients that include (but not limited to):

"How should I structure my business?"

"My business is incorporated in Delaware, I heard I can save on taxes by incorporating in Delaware."

"My company is an S-corp, because...TAXES!"

"Wait..I gotta pay taxes on THIS?"

Like most accountants, I get a lot of questions about taxes, business structure, and an occasional, "My books are a mess! HELP!" Most of the questions can be easily handled by the business owner with the right advice and guidance. That's where I come in. There are a lot of accountants that can assist, but it will cost you greatly, and you may not understand the "whys" behind the decisions. It is my goal to communicate the "whys" in a direct way, without all the accounting and tax jargon.

This blog is my way of answering the many questions I get personally and that I see from across the internet in a plain but researched supported way. I look forward to sharing my knowledge, and hopefully helping you with your business needs.
